Plastic Surgery Statistics – What Is the Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedure?

By David Berry

Plastic surgery is quickly becoming one of the most sought after medical procedures in America. Every year the number of people who seek to have some kind of cosmetic procedure performed grows, with some procedures showing drastic leaps in the how many surgeries are done annually.

The number of plastic surgeries performed does not seem to have any boundaries in the race or gender of the patient seeking the procedure. Both men and women alike from all races are seeking to have their appearance enhanced with the cosmetic procedures that are available. Women however, are still the largest percentage of the population seeking plastic surgery procedures, making up 91% of the population looking for cosmetic changes.

Probably the number one procedure to be performed, is that of Botox injections. Botox is a non-surgical method of plastic surgery and the number of patients receiving this surgery is growing by leaps and bounds every year. In 2007 alone, more than 2 million patients received Botox injections making it the most sought after method of a cosmetic procedure.

Closely following Botox in the most popular procedures performed are Hyaluronic Acid treatments and laser hair removal. Both are non-surgical methods of plastic surgery and they help to improve the overall appearance of the skin. Close to 1.5 million patients received hyaluronic acid treatments, with only slightly less seeking laser hair removal, with 1.4 million procedures performed.

As far as plastic surgery options that require actual surgical procedures, liposuction is the number one procedure as far as the number of surgeries performed, with over 450,000 patients receiving this treatment annually. Breast augmentation surgeries for both men and women closely follows, with just under 400,000 procedures performed.

It does appear that age plays a factor in the percentage of those that seek treatment. Forty-seven percent of all treatments performed were on those men and women between the ages of 35 and 50, with liposuction being the number one surgical procedure performed in this age group. Twenty-one percent of the treatments performed were on those between the ages of 19 and 34, with breast augmentation leading the way for the top surgical procedure for those ages.

Find a cosmetic surgeon with whom you feel comfortable is one of the most important decisions to make before undergoing breast augmentation, tummy tuck, or another plastic surgery procedure.

In this tough economy with job loss at an all time high and self esteem at an all time low, it’s become more important for Americans to put their best face forward. Many turn to less costly, non-invasive cosmetic solutions to look competent and feel confident whether in the workplace, or looking for work.

Thoroughly educating yourself on potential procedures is the first step to choosing a surgeon. Extensive information is available on the on many web sites, including: aafprs.org. The site can help you develop a list of questions to ask your board certified surgeon about to help you better understand his or her experience – especially as it applies to the procedure you wish to have. Your choice of a surgeon should be based on whether they are comprehensively educated and actually performing the procedure you are looking to have done. When considering a surgical procedure to the face, you should make sure that you select a surgeon who only specializes in the face.

Dr. Sam Rizk MD, FACS, (www.drsamrizk.com), a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon based in New York City, is a good example. Aside from being one of the few to hold double certification, he also teaches residents at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, the premier plastic surgery institution in New York, as well as instructing at plastic surgery conferences worldwide. Patients who elect to have Dr. Rizk benefit from the best surgical outcomes performed with industry leading technology.
